South View High School’s Ladies of the View club has won a wonderful grant through the Helen Jones Melvin Education Endowment of Cumberland Community Foundation. The “Tigers Can Fly” is a STEM rich program that will strengthen skills in science, technology, engineering and math. This program will expose our girls to the possibilities of an innovative career in engineering, aeronautics, engineering design and programming by incorporating 21st century skills of critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, problem solving and teamwork. With this knowledge, our girls will be able to learn about the importance of drones, the design and programming of drones, drone safety and even how to compete and win with their drones. Congratulations to Dr. Karen Atkins and to the girls in Ladies of the View!

Registration is now open for students who are interested in pursuing a Military Career! Now is the time to sign up for the second fall 2019 ASVAB test. Please register here for the exam. You must be in the 10th (ROTC ONLY), 11th, or 12th grade to register. The ASVAB will be administered in the SVHS Auditorium. Please make sure you are there by 8:30 a.m. to sign in. The last day to register will be Wednesday, January 29, 2020, by 4:00 p.m.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE ASVAB TEST?

    • Your scores in four critical areas — Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Mathematics Knowledge (see below) — count towards your Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) score. The AFQT score determines whether you’re qualified to enlist in the U.S. military.
  • Your scores in the other areas of the ASVAB will determine how qualified you are for certain military occupational specialties and Enlistment Bonuses. A high score will improve your chances of getting the specialty/job and signing bonus you want.
  • Scoring high on the ASVAB will require study and concentration.
  • Please visit the ASVAB program website for more information on the ASVAB Test.
  • Don’t skimp on preparing for this test. It’s your future. Get the most out of it.
